Cloth diapering is becoming the choice of many Canadian parents. According to some 'Diaper Facts' posted by the RDA (Real Diaper Association), disposable diapers are the third largest single consumer item in landfills, and represent about 4% of solid waste. In a house with a child in diapers, disposables make up 50% of household waste.

Cradle Cap~ a natural, at-home treatment

More often than not, babies will develop a condition commonly called Cradle Cap, or Seborrhoeic dermatitis. According to medical professionals, it is very common, and is not necessarily linked to an infection or poor hygiene.

Rather, Cradle Cap is the result of overactive oil glands in the scalp, and may be related to the baby's mother’s hormones still circulating in the child after birth. As skin cells renew themselves, the dead cells fall off. In the case of Cradle Cap, cells are renewing themselves faster than they shed, so the dead cells get trapped under new skin.

The condition can range from mild to extreme, and may even move from the scalp down into the eyebrows. Scales are yellow, crusty, greasy patches, often itchy and irritating. Cradle Cap usually appears when baby reaches 3 months of age, and disappears by their first birthday. It can remain for longer and may even re-appear later in life.

Today was the most successful Sapperton Street Fest I have seen in our 3 years in the 'hood. Street Performers, Vendors, new Retailers, bike racers and musicians were all out to celebrate Sapperton and help raise money for the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. Dimpleskins Naturals collected proceeds from the sale of Bum Bum Balm to donate to the cause.

Calling all cloth diapering, cloth-curious parents ~ the cloth diaper industry is a boomin'.
Thousands of parents are switching to cloth for several reasons:

the environment (disposables can leave behind an average of 2/5-3 tons of garbage per child)
cost effective ($500 average per child, compared to approx $3000 with disposables) See New & Green Baby's Cost Comparison Sheet for more info!
convenience (how many times have you just set baby down for their bed time diaper change only to find that you are out of diapers!!)

If you're not convinced, you can usually test out cloth diapers. Most cloth diaper shops offer a kit containing a couple of each brand or style of diaper so you can see which one works best for you before you make a big purchase.

Don't forget~ when you are ready to make the switch, you cannot use a zinc based diaper cream with cloth diapers as it creates a waterproofing on the diaper causing 'stuff' to run out the sides. Zinc is also difficult to wash out, hence ruining your diapers in the end. The natural choice...

Seven wonderful, busy, long years ago, BUM BUM BALM was born out of necessity. Seven years ago, there were not many natural, I mean REALLY, TRULY natural, products on the market that were pure enough for my baby's skin.

1. Better for the Environment: Cloth diapers are simply better for the environment. In the entire life cycle of a cloth diaper, a cloth diaper consumes much less energy and resources and produces far less waste than it's disposable counterpart. A Report on Phthalates in Baby Products

Canada's CTV news ran a report this week on a number of baby shampoos, lotions, and powders containing a man-made chemical called Phthalates, after a U.S. study was conducted. This chemical may be found in certain fragrances and plastics, such as baby bottles.

Says CTV on the study, "U.S. researchers tested the urine of 163 infants aged two to 28 months, 24 hours after they were shampooed with the baby shampoos, wiped with baby wipes, and had baby lotions, powders and diaper creams applied. (The name brands of the baby products the parents used were not recorded by the study authors.)
All of the urine samples contained at least one phthalate, and 80 per cent of the samples had measurable amounts of at least seven types of phthalates."

As several baby products contain fragrance, the possibility of hidden Phthalates is high. One fragrance can be composed of hundreds of chemicals, so there may actually be several other toxins lurking in one bottle of bubble bath.
Do your baby a favour and read the label! Avoid chemicals such as Phthalates, synthetic Fragrances (use pure essential oils in place of 'Fragrance'), Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (a foaming agent found in toothpaste, shampoo, bubble bath, soap) as these chemicals have been linked to eczema, allergies, and possible reproductive problems.
